How to Rank in AI Search: A Practical Guide to Answer Engine Optimization (AEO)

ChatGPT, Claude, and Perplexity now answer questions your customers used to Google. Here's how to make your business the source they cite — a step-by-step AEO playbook for 2026.

By Urloft

Search is splitting in two. Half your customers still open Google. The other half ask ChatGPT, Claude, or Perplexity — and get a synthesized answer with a handful of cited sources. Answer Engine Optimization (AEO) is the practice of becoming one of those cited sources.

At Urloft we build these systems and optimize for them. Here’s the playbook we use.

Why AEO is different from SEO

Traditional SEO earns a ranked link. A user still clicks through. AEO earns a citation inside the answer itself — the model reads your content, extracts a fact, and attributes it to you. The mechanics differ in three ways:

  • Extractability beats keyword density. Models reward clear, self-contained factual statements over keyword-stuffed prose.
  • Structure is machine-readable. Schema.org structured data and clean headings help models understand what your page asserts.
  • Freshness and specificity win citations. Concrete numbers, dates, and named entities get quoted; vague marketing copy does not.

The AEO checklist

1. Let the crawlers in

The single most common mistake: blocking AI crawlers in robots.txt. If you want to be cited, explicitly allow GPTBot, OAI-SearchBot, ClaudeBot, PerplexityBot, and Google-Extended.

2. Publish an llms.txt

An emerging standard, llms.txt is a plain-Markdown brief at your domain root that tells language models exactly who you are, what you do, and the facts you want quoted. Think of it as a press kit written for machines.

3. Add structured data

Mark up your organization, services, FAQs, and reviews with JSON-LD. A connected @graph — where every entity references the others by @id — helps both Google’s rich results and AI answer engines resolve your business as one coherent entity.

4. Write extractable answers

Lead each section with a direct, quotable sentence. “Most marketing sites take 2–6 weeks to build” is citable. “We pride ourselves on fast turnaround” is not.

5. Keep FAQs visible and structured

The answer in your FAQPage schema must also appear as visible text on the page. Answer engines — and Google — cross-check the two.

What to measure

You can’t see a rank position in an LLM, so track proxies: branded queries in ChatGPT/Perplexity, referral traffic from chat.openai.com and perplexity.ai, and whether your key facts appear when you ask the models directly.

The bottom line

AEO isn’t a replacement for SEO — it’s the same discipline extended to a new surface. Clean structure, honest facts, and open crawler access make you legible to both Google and the models. Get those right and you show up wherever your customers are asking.
